Welcome to the Consultation on Proposals for Fencing on Mungrisdale, Saddleback and Bowscale Commons
The purpose of the exclosures is to exclude sheep from five areas planted as native woodland in 2009, Young Wood, a rare area of high altitude oak woodland, and an area of juniper scrub at Swineside. The proposal is that the exclosure fences will remain in place for a further 15 years to allow the trees to become better established so that they are more able to withstand sheep grazing once the fences are removed. These areas are on open access land and there will be gates and stiles along the fences to allow the public access to the exclosures.
Full details of the locations and lengths of these fences can be found in the four downloadable documents on this page, which include assessments of landscape impacts and potential impacts on the English Lake District World Heritage Site.
Please note that some of the documents for download refer to extending the permission for fencing for 20 years. The application however is for a 15 year extension.
We want to hear your thoughts, comments and opinions on the fencing proposals. If you have any comments please send them in writing on or before the 13th October 2023 to:
